- The agreement covers battery energy storage projects located across several regions of Spain, with a total installed storage capacity of 625 MWh.
- The agreement provides ENGIE with access to the flexibility offered by these assets over the next ten years, while enabling IGNIS to secure the revenues generated through the operation of the batteries in the day-ahead electricity market
ENGIE and IGNIS have signed a long-term flexibility purchase agreement covering several Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) projects across Spain, with a total installed storage capacity of 625 MWh.
Under the agreement, ENGIE will benefit from the flexibility provided by the battery systems in the day-ahead electricity market over a ten-year period, while IGNIS will secure the revenues generated by these assets. IGNIS will also be responsible for operating the facilities and optimizing their participation in electricity balancing services.
The battery projects covered by the agreement, which are expected to become operational in 2028, will store electricity during periods of peak renewable generation and discharge it when demand requires, reducing exposure to electricity market volatility while enhancing the flexibility and stability of the power system.
With this agreement, ENGIE, a global leader in the energy transition, continues to advance its strategy of integrating flexibility, an increasingly critical element for the resilience of the electricity system, into its business model and the solutions it offers to its customer
For its part, IGNIS, which last year became the first independent operator in Spain to manage a stand-alone battery in the electricity market, is further strengthening its commitment to energy storage.
“In addition to securing recurring revenues alongside a top-tier counterparty such as ENGIE, this agreement enables us to continue maximizing the value of these assets through our expertise in electricity balancing services. In this way, IGNIS continues to contribute to the flexibility of the Spanish electricity system and to the electrification of our economy,” said Santiago Bordiú, Head of IGNIS Energy.
Jean Nicolas Lejeune, Managing Director of ENGIE’s Supply & Energy Management division for Iberia, commented:
“This agreement reinforces ENGIE’s position as a leading player in enabling market access for energy storage assets in Spain. We are leveraging our energy management platform to unlock the flexibility of battery storage and bring it to the market. By combining this storage capacity with the renewable energy in our portfolio, we are further advancing our ambition to provide customers with a competitive, decarbonized, and 24/7 energy supply”.
