Through our “Journeys of Growth” series, we shine a light on young professionals who turned their early steps at ENGIE into key roles. Today, meet Mary Matthews, Junior Trader, whose career reflects ENGIE’s commitment to empowering talent and fostering growth opportunities across the globe.
From internship to discovery
Mary joined ENGIE North America in January 2022 as an intern in Power Origination. At the time, she imagined a future in long-term contracts and client relationships. But her curiosity and exposure to different roles opened new doors.
“I thought I wanted to go into origination,” she recalls, “but discovering trading changed everything.”
Exploring opportunities
After her internship, Mary transitioned into a full-time role as Commercial Analyst, gaining experience in gas and power origination, risk, finance, and legal. Later, she joined the Renewable Energy Credit Desk, where she deepened her market knowledge and supported traders.
Along the way, she contributed to an Operational Excellence project, managing tasks and collaborating with IT and project management teams, an experience that strengthened her leadership skills and broadened her network.
Landing a key role
In April 2025, Mary became Junior Trader on the Northeast Power Trading Desk in Houston, Texas. Her role involves analyzing wholesale markets, managing short term positions for PJM (the main power grid for the U.S. Northeast), and navigating day-ahead and real-time dynamics.
“It’s analytical, fast-paced, and exciting,” she says. “I love watching markets and reading data, it’s exactly where I want to be.”
